Beams & Seams

The new addition looks more and more like a building with each passing week! Pretty soon it will look so much like a building that we won't be able to look into it anymore, because the floor of the second level will be poured. For now, we can still observe the construction activities.

Earlier this week, workers were coordinating with the crane to lower all of these steel beams in place. One of them was standing on the block wall, where he would slot the beam into place on the wall, and then scoot out onto the beam to disconnect it from the crane. To him it was obviously all in a day's work, but to me it would have been terrifying! Everything happened without incident though.

Here is the unveiled retaining wall, in all of its curved glory. The vast majority of this wall will eventually end up covered with dirt in order to bring the surface level back up to what it was. The fun story about this wall is that while they were pouring it, last week, one of the seams in the forms split and the form popped off. However, the wall doesn't seem to have suffered too much - it looks quite sturdy, on top of the footing which is on top of the lean concrete.
